Water, Water Everywhere

Picture the scene. Just as everything seems set for the cortege to move off, a breathless relative emerges from the house with an elaborate floral tribute that's all-too-obviously just been plucked from a bucket of water. Whilst a good shake behind the closed doors of the funeral home might be in order, this is not something that will go down too well in full view of the mourners. So what does your conductor do?

Making a practice of placing wet flowers onto a veneer deck can mean more than just annoying watermarks on your burr walnut, since that innocuous-looking trickle can over time run down inside the hearse body and store up untold nasties for an MOT in five or six years hence.

Binz UK has now come up with a solution to the problem in the form of removable moulded ABS flower trays specially shaped to sit below the glass viewing window frame edge on its Mercedes-Benz extended chassis E-Class hearses. Quite apart from the protection they offer, the trays can be slid along the deck as loading progresses, making for neater arrangement of multiple tributes, and far less risk of damage to those farthest away from the tailgate.

As Binz UK's technical director Lee Smith explains, "People don't realise that with a typical tribute there can be as much as a litre of water locked up in each Oasis base. But it is the individual sheafs and sprays where the real problem lies, since these can stay wrapped in their protective cellophane, and their stems are often still saturated with moisture when they go onto the hearse"

Though designed with an eye to the company's own range of vehicles, Binz's flower trays may well fit other marques. As Lee Smith says, "We have tried them in a number of pre-owned hearses that pass through our hands when people upgrade to Binz fleets, but people can always ring us to check exact dimensions".
