PRESS INFORMATION FROM BINZ UK Five Go Mad In The Mud What happens when you take five highly-skilled service technicians whose bread and butter is taking care of the precision engineering in a Binz manufactured Mercedes-Benz based hearse or limousine, and let them loose on something where brawn counts for more than brain? Lots of mudlarking, not a few laughs, a crushed car or two, and a set of pictures that are best kept hidden in the workshop restroom. The Binz UK 'Grand Day Out' began with a the obligatory safety briefing, after which the group of eager service people were introduced to their steed. One very large, very dirty and very mean-looking ex-British Army Chieftain tank. Leading the team of budding tankers was Lee Smith, Binz UK's technical director, who explains "It weighs 55 tons, and you have to climb through a very small hole to sit in it. To steer you have two large control levers for left and right, and a foot throttle. The gun is of course deactivated, but there are seats and guard rails welded onto the turret to let those who are not driving share the experience - and a video link back to the safety area for playback later" The day began with each of the Binz people having a go at driving the Chieftain down a waterlogged track, then turning round and coming back. Not as simple as it sounds, especially as no-one had driven a track-laying vehicle before, and the route also involved mastering the Chieftain's idiosyncratic gear-changing sequence. Other treats laid on later in the day included some circuits in a variety of other armoured vehicles including an Abbott self-propelled gun, and an armoured personnel carrier. Plus a spot of the obligatory car-crushing. To round off, the 'Team Binz' were let loose on some quad-bikes, which according to Lee Smith was "Quite good fun - if a bit muddy. But we purchased some extra laps anyway!"
